Joyce McEwen Crane, PhD, PCC

Dr. McEwen Crane believes that remaining curious and having a keen understanding of relationships and ability to diagnose and navigate complex systems is a hallmark of masterful leadership. She leverages this knowledge and understanding both in her work for the Community Engagement Institute at Wichita State University as well as in her work as a member of the Kansas Leadership Center’s Core Teaching Faculty and as chair of the Leadership Coach Intensive.

Joyce has successfully trained and coached hundreds of executives and doctors (including at the Provost, Dean and Department Chair level) and people in positions of authority/management across various sectors including post-secondary/ tertiary education (WSU, KU, KSU and Fort Hays State) and healthcare (KU Medical Center, The Cedars, Greenwood and Kearny County Hospitals, various executives in mental health care). She completed her PhD in Psychology and her MA in Clinical and Counseling Psychology at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX. She holds the Professional Certified Coach (PCC) credential from the International Coach Federation and is a Certified Life Coach through the Institute for Life Coach Training. She is certified in the use of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), the EQi-2.0, Case-In-Point pedagogy and the Immunity to Change framework. She completed the Art and Practice of Leadership Development at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government Executive Education program in 2017 and remains connected to her large world-wide network of colleagues who are also practicing and teaching adaptive leadership, providing corporate consulting and executive coaching. A former adjunct at several universities, Joyce was awarded the Jan LaFever Adjunct Teaching Award 2014-2015 at Friends University. Joyce is a co-founder of the innovative coaching venture, the Ad Astra Coach Alliance, and owns her own business, Resonance Coaching and Consulting.

Clients and co-workers admire Joyce’s gift for leadership and mentoring as well as her knack for strategy and larger systems thinking, describing her as a “true visionary.” She derives great joy serving as a consultant and coach for businesses, foundations, community coalitions and nonprofits in Kansas and beyond. Her rich background includes owning two successful businesses and managing two counseling centers, as well as developing several leadership and corporate training programs. She has worked with dozens of organizations and businesses to create strategy and succession plans, facilitated numerous processes around cultural change.

Joyce lives in Wichita with her husband and can be found experimenting with recipes in the kitchen, hiking or sailing wherever she can find trails and water, or traveling to her final (yet to be explored) US capitol buildings across the US and to other exotic and interesting places across the globe. Joyce is a proud fourth-generation Kansan and comes from a long history of farming, teaching, entrepreneurship, and community service.
